Paloma Contreras Lomas uses humor and Baroque excess to explore gender, violence, classism, colonial guilt, and Mexican identity. Drawing from pop culture, horror, true crime, and science fiction, her work merges autobiography and research to examine social and postcolonial power structures.
Tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de Estados Unidos (EN: So Far from God and So Close to the United States) explores the complex entanglements of gentrification in Mexico City, using the ornate visual language of the Mexican Baroque as a metaphor for the contemporary mass grave—a space where beauty, violence, history, and power converge. With biting irony and unsettling visuals, the work examines how cultural production operates within systems of inequality where even critique risks becoming a form of spectacle, and reflects on how privilege, aestheticization, and economic power collide in the making of the ‘new place to be.’
