Danila Lipatov & Karen Zimmermann have been working together since 2017. Using the methods of autofiction, queer archiving, and performative reconstructions, they create temporary collaborative spaces in search of possibilities of care and resistance.
The garden of a terraced house is a carefully ordered system that requires care, work, and attention, while also offering space for play, relaxation, and discovery. In the work of Danila Lipatov & Karen Zimmermann, the garden becomes, through weekly phone conversations with their mothers in Moscow and Remscheid, a metaphor for family systems: fragments of memories are shared which gesture toward normative social roles and expectations. How do we escape the rigid structures that shape us? When do we break through persistent familial expectations–like defiant weeds forcing their way through all forms of order?
